Inside. Notes from the Season 9 Dissect podcast. 

Bo Burnham was fulfilled at 16 and transformed at 32 to be fulfilled in a different way.

You must be fulfilled and love yourself before serving others. 

Content is synonymous and a reflection of who we are as people.

 

The internet is in the puberty phase and we need to be self-aware of how our private lives are impacted from it. 

Content and Art what line does it fall on?

You follow yourself with a camera both within yourself and outside yourself. 

You are your brand and publicist walking through your experiences and floating behind yourself.

You put yourself in situations but you begin thinking about how the world will perceive what you are creating digitally. 

You are in a hall of mirrors and making you not want to leave the house and never feel that you are in yourself. Similar to anxiety. 

Objectifying your own experience and creating a narrative that everything is a quantity to be sold and presented and stretch as far as planning on a moment to reminisce on that moment. 

How does a camera when presented in a room affect our behavior? 

Comedy and our desire for entertainment contributes to the problems we face.

Wanting songs establish desire and the overcome of fear 

I never feel more fulfilled than when I’m making something that’s interesting and challenging myself I’m most happy

Human condition of sadness is a shared feeling 

What I align with specifically in art is I personally connect to pieces of art and things I don’t demographically align with. 

That is powerful to engine empathy and change 

And connect myself to someone who is not me. 

Universal shared humanity with art alleviates anxiety.

Systematically we have to be our own publicist brand and venture our own legacy. A celebrity in democracy. Running your own legacy and biography. 

To reduce the anxiety we feel I have to express it to make others feel they are not alone. 

Anxiety is like your nervous system riding a bull

You have to feel that your experience of anxiety is not alone because it makes you feel that you are special 

you need to let that go. Your feelings of anxiety are collective. Not alone. 

There is a growing disconnect from the ones who are most valuable in our lives with the advancement of technology (FaceTiming my mom) 

Kids are learning from media, not inside the classroom.

Education is a classless curriculum taught by those in power. 

Education is never neutral. 

Perpetuating oppressive systems.

Students are not to question the teacher. 

A banking model of education that dehumanizes students and accepts whatever is taught is to be rejuvenated. 

In the model they are empty vessels and listen to what they are told. 

Life works through blood. 

Americas manifest destiny gave a religious right to murder Native Americans. Oriented divine by god. 

Capitalists benefit from the worker class. And separates the value between the worker and capitalist 

 

Property is theft and stealing it as gain for oneself 

White people own 98% of all property

Neo liberalism favor non globalization 

Not socialist views

Brands awareness when social unrest occurs. Marketing to committing to social change. 

However, corporations are a fundamental part of the problem. Systemic racism needs a complete upheaval. 

JP Morgan had slaves for collateral. 

A historic racist corporation that used slavery to build their wealth. 

Money.

Playing life like a board game.

 Quantity on every action you make. 

A brand to be managed and how we are perceived by others. 

Convergence of the brand to the individual has elevated it with social media. 

All your opinions are guiding your brand. 

Every quantity to be tended too. 

The cultivation of social media is a brand to be managed and makes decisions carefully. 

The Modern overlap of brand to individual has a similarity between an empty brand campaign built around social issues. 

Influencers using a backdrop on Black Lives Matter is an example of capitalizing on the attention the movement was receiving to raise their own brand awareness. 

Capital rewards. 

The visuals match the feed of social media. The development of social media has perpetuated our view of the world and of ourselves. 

The Instagram feed and our actual life cannot compete with the perfectionism of digital life and appearance in media. 

The space of expressing ourselves is not that simple. 

This space is associated with depression, isolation and anxiety. 

Women experience a higher rate of depression and have lower self esteem and sleep less each night. 

Studies of feedback seeking from digital media cause these symptoms. 

Photoshop the best moment of our lives. 

Our lives and our attention is the new mechanism of capitalism. 

The internet has now phased to just post something here to now live there. 

That’s social media.

social lives don’t need to be made more efficient. 

As a society, we are confused and conflicted with what we are even doing. 

Harmful to the long-term damage of what it causes young women. It’s impossible to be fully human on the internet. 

Only show a piece of ourselves. 

We start with what makes a great post and go backwards from there.

Music is all I know. 

Making music is similar to my experience in sports in regard to the preparation and the outcome of performance. 

Doing things when you can’t miss as a ball player is magic. 

You can have a white moment when making music or when you hit a different zone of creativity that you didn’t even know was there.

Truthfulness and love in your heart is powerful.

Validation is a dangerous place

Libration is removing financial stresses and having security. 

I want power over respect we are imperfect. I am the hero. We are the hero’s journey and painting our own legacy. Can’t control my desire. I want to curate my life that is power and I want to pull the strings of my life. 

Currency of the internet is a competition for getting the most attention.

Currency is attention.

Endless pursuit of attention transform raw material to culture 

All this benefits the corporations who built these platforms. 

Unpaid intern is symbolic of new slaves or people who are not even considered human and accomplish minimal tasks for “experience” 

They are considered trainees rather than employees.

This only increases the generational wealth gap among communities.

16 ton in debt is a symbolism of the history of exploitation. 

Miners paid in currency not real money but in payment of only being able to buy food and services of the company they worked for.

Exploitation. 

How do we consume your time as much as possible?

Sean Parks created the like button to exploit the social validation loop and give us a hit of dopamine. 

He exploited the vulnerability of human psychology. 

Without even realizing it. 

Seeking to satisfy this dopamine, we activate, fueled by the neurotransmitter working with the brain reward system. 

When achieved the brain releases the opioids system to release dopamine and perpetuate the loop.

You scroll to satisfy this loop. In an infinite feed. And it’s good that it doesn’t happen immediately. Always new content to satisfy the dopamine.

It changes the social behavior and relationship with society and each other. 

What could it be doing to our children?

Flattening the human experience.

To live on the internet.

The anticipation of getting it is just as important as satisfying the loop.

3 Act Structure Hero

Act 1

1. Setup for exposition introducing the protagonist their relationships and the world they live in Bo is the protagonist showing his world which is his room and he’s relationships which is no one 

2. Once these elements are introduced, a dynamic or inviting incident occurs which confronts the main character (climate change systemic oppression etc.) 

3. Is the call to Adventure signifying the hero accepting their call and the journey begins.

Act 2 Rising Action 

1. Protagonist trying to resolve a problem based on the incident (Bo with Comedy) attempts to heal the world

2. Midpoint climax is an important scene where the character comes to a resolution and changes the projection of the story. Reversal of fortune and revelation. The character cannot give up their pursuit. The bridge has been burned behind him and they can only move forward. Manifested as a ticking clock. 

Me on stage of a character it is me as a performer they are exaggerating of something

The inside video game feels like a stronger association of feeling out of body. 

Video games take you out of your mind avoiding pain. Detaching you from yourself. 

Makes sense why I love them. 

The spotlight motif is his entire being is on the content he is making.

The internet's democratization makes it difficult for people to find what’s important or of value. Too many people talking. 

It’s exhausting. 

We thought everyone having a voice of great but cannot decide which one is important 

Verse 4 to 5 speeds tempo 

The me generation was created because that was the older generations respond to what we wanted

To perform and now we all perform all the time for our narcissism.

Becoming A satisfied audience member 

NO sacred boundaries in capitalism 

Deadpool irony of commercials, is instant irony that life is about reaction. 

Making us think about experience and what experience really is. 

There it is again that funny feeling 

Social action that results in low risk 

The whole world at your fingertips, the ocean at your door.

In theory, with Infinite information at our fingertips, yet the information calling for us to avoid doomsday desensitizes us. Scroll on.

Capitalism does not discriminate when profit is involved, guns.

The irony of our funny feelings affect our collective psyche.

Goreaphobia avoid situations that may cause panic or embarrassment 

Developed in 1 or 2 panic attacks.

Post truth is the beginning of our end.

The play Inside is split in two halves

1st half funny haha comedic irony 

2nd half is tragic funny 

We aren’t sure if our life is comedic or tragic

Should we laugh at Kendall using Pepsi to solve racial injustice?

Should we cry at Logan Paul announcing he is running for president?

- [ ] Social media and YouTube are interesting because we have come to the understanding that it’s an honest performance and honest lie about it. 

- [ ] young performers think that’s much more true than If the camera were filming outside a window a person who doesn’t know they are being filmed. 

- [ ] What is your performed truth to other people? Your private truth is gone. Being watched everywhere we go we are stuck in performance. Is this true? Big Brother? 

- [ ] Performance itself might inherently be a kind of lie. And it is after all is constructed (Bos weeping is acting).  There is an understanding that it is an honest performance as an audience we feel the emotional truth behind the performance within the context of art. Bo is bringing in the context of the emotion to his performance. 

Compassion fatigue. You say the world's ending. Honey it already did, you're not going to slow it, heaven knows you tried.

Despite understanding it is no sustainable way to live, unshackling yourself from the burden of caring and indulging in the freedom of indifference is enticing. 

It is a command to stay indoors and sink deeper in themselves.

The world be damned. 

Bo’s chaotic energy as we sit in as the passive audience member the digital transaction causes Bo to collapse. 

The climax and peak of Bo’s anxiety and converging crisis of the world. And the digital flattening of the human experience is being done with the unchecked influence of big tech. 

Outside anxiety: climate change, late stage capitalism, Covid, gun violence, economic inequality, racism, politics

Inside anxiety: the reality of performance, loss of interiority, dehumanization, over stimulation, desensitization, decline of empathy and human connection. 

Song All eyes on me captures the anthem of these overwhelming themes. 

Act 3 supreme ordeal

Toe to toe with the camera 

Making their journey home.

Singing goodbye

Perform your truth. 

Bo being stuck outside is a Va Bod show

A blurred lines between reality and performance 

Returning home changed from the journey.

A universal story initiated through an individual story.

Disassociation of ourselves has us constantly view our life as a performance. 

An individual performing to tell us our unending performance. 

Competing with our own reality of what’s true and illusion. 

Performing all the time leads us to anxiety. 

Bo Smiling at the end is contentment of the work completed. 

He went outside, gathered what was needed and immediately went back inside. 

Performance is unrelenting and everyday. 

Live your life without an audience. Does that mold happiness?

A hall of mirrors. 

Stuck in prison where all eyes are on him.

He’s blurred the lines between Bo the performer and Bo.

Images have converged of the unsettling smile. 

This very thing is causing him pain. 

He has successfully displayed two competing identities of terror and happiness. The funny feeling of being alive during the internet.

The real Bo is never shown. 

The setting of the house. 

A home we cannot leave. 

Because of the anxiety and weight of the world and relationships we feel. 

What to do 

Corner of the world and made his corner as pretty as he could. 

The human story is creating the story of expressing true. And make it as beautiful as it can. For that gives your life purpose. 

Amit the uncontrollable merits we inherit, we are destined to perform. We must try to perform an honest one. 

We hope At the end of the story we sit back as an audience member and smile. 

As Bo did.
